What Is Bipolar II Disorder?

Bipolar II Disorder is a mood disorder characterized by alternating periods of depression and hypomania — a milder form of mania that still brings noticeable changes in mood, energy, and behavior.
While Bipolar I includes full manic episodes (which can cause severe impairment or require hospitalization), Bipolar II involves hypomanic episodes that don’t reach that level of intensity — but are still very real and disruptive.
People with Bipolar II often spend more time in depression than in hypomania, which can make diagnosis challenging, as many initially seek help for low mood rather than mood elevation.
Living Well with Bipolar II
With consistent care, many people with Bipolar II lead full, stable, and meaningful lives. Some even find that their heightened sensitivity and creativity — often linked to hypomanic states — become strengths when balanced properly.
Managing Bipolar II is about learning to work with your mind, not against it. With treatment, stability isn’t just possible — it’s sustainable.
